Is it possible to use an external flash with a Canon EOS 4000D? When I select the external flash option within the menu I get a message as shown in the attached image. If it is possible, which do you recommend?

Yes, an external flash can be used with a Canon EOS 400D. The recommended options are EOS-dedicated EX-series Speedlites, which operate like a built-in flash with autoflash control managed by the camera. Other Canon Speedlites, such as EZ/E/EG/ML/TL-series, cannot be used in TTL or A-TTL autoflash mode but may work in manual flash mode if available. Non-Canon flash units can also be used, but the camera synchronizes with them at 1/200s.
