The augers distribute asphalt from the hopper in front
of the screed. The screed "floats" on the asphalt as it
passes under the screed plate, leveling the asphalt to
maintain thickness. The end gates contain the asphalt
material at the outer edge of the screed. Use the screed
extensions when paving widths exceeding eight (8) feet.
(Figure 4-46) When adjusted correctly, pressure on
the rear edge of the extended screed is the same as the
rear edge of the main screed, resulting in a smooth mat
the length of the screed.

Extend or retract the screed extension using the
extension levers on the hydraulic controls. (Figure

NOTE: The right screed extension can also be
operated from the right side of the paver.

Adjust the screed extension while paving using the
following procedures:
1.
Move paver to the starting position for paving.
2. Extend the screed to the desired width.
3. To set the depth, you can place a small starter block
under the screed while you make adjustments.
(Figure 4-48)

4. Level the screed using the flight screw. (Figure
4-49)

5. Push the screed float lever forward to the FLOAT
position. (Figure 4-47)
6. Turn the flight screw one turn (clockwise) to get

started, then turn either direction to adjust the angle
of the screed and mat thickness (thicker or thinner)
as needed while paving.
• While paving, check the mat thickness regularly
and make minor screed adjustments using the flight
screw as needed.
