2.10 Sump Filter-(Old & New)

The sump is connected to the underside of the container and houses the filter. Inside of
which is a plastic ball whose function is to prevent powder from being washed away as
the machine fills with water. Unfortunately in the early machines the ball caused more
problems than it solved, due to the amount of noise it made as the machine was washing.
Most engineers removed them when servicing the machines during the guaranty period.
Included in the moulding of the sump is the pressure chamber. A large bore hose
connects the sump to the pump housing. The new sump is of rubber construction and it
connects straight onto the pump.
If the drum is overloaded, small items can get passed the door seal, such as
handkerchiefs or socks, and they will find their way into the sump filter, and block it.
Coins and buttons also get through and end up in the filter.
One of the worst items is the elastic band; it gets past all the filters and ends up
wrapping itself around the impellor on the pump. Unless you are very lucky the pump
will have to come out and be stripped down to free it.
