Safety and commissioning instructions for hazardous areas
Operating instructions supplement
Contents
This supplement to the 3RW40 operating instructions provides
safety and commissioning instructions for hazardous areas.
These must be adhered to without fail when protecting motors in
hazardous areas.
Target groups
This supplement is aimed at the following target groups:
• Planners and project engineers
• Commissioning engineers
• Maintenance and service personnel
Instructions and standards
The increased danger in hazardous areas requires strict obser-
vance of the following instructions and standards:
• EN 60079-14 / VDE 0165 electrical apparatus for use in explo-
sive gas atmospheres
• EN 50281-1-2 electrical apparatus for use in the presence of
combustible dust
All 3RW40 devices are approved under Device Group II, Cate-
gory (2) in the "GD" area (areas in which explosive gas, vapor,
mist or air mixtures as well as combustible dust are present):
BVS 05 ATEX F 002
WARNING
!
All work involving connection, commissioning and
maintenance are to be carried out by qualified and
responsible personnel. Improper conduct can lead to serious
personal injury and damage to the equipment.
Set-up and commissioning
Please observe the following operating instructions inlcuded
with the respective device for the set-up and commissioning of
the soft starters:
• 3RW40 5 and 3RW40 7,
Order No. 3ZX1012-0RW40-1AA1
• 3RW402, 3RW403 and 3RW404,
Order No. 3ZX1012-0RW40-2DA1.
Wire fault output 95 96 to an upstream switching device so that
the branch is switched off via the switching device in case of a
fault (see Figures 2 and 3).
Short-circuit protection
Short-circuit protection must be carried out by separately arran-
ged overcurrent protection devices.
Cable and line protection
Avoid unpermissibly high surface temperatures of the cables
and lines by appropriately dimensioning the cross section!
Select an adequate cable cross section – especially for CLASS
20.

Setting the rated operational current of the motor
Set the 3RW40 to the rated operational current I
(according to the name plate or prototype test certificate of the
motor).
NOTICE
Observe the trip class and/or the tripping characteristic of the
3RW40. Select a trip class that also provides thermal
protection of the motor when the rotor is blocked. Motor and
lines must be designed for the trip class selected.
Example
Motor 500 V, 50 / 60 Hz, 110 kW, 156 A, temperature class T3,

Setting the trip class
WARNING
!
Setting the trip class to "OFF" deactivates the motor protection
of the device. This invalidates the EC prototype test certificate
according to directive 94 / 9 / EC (ATEX 100A certification).
