To make a custom-sized bag using the Seal-a-Meal FSSMSL0160-033:

1. Pull enough bag material from the Bag Roll to fit the item to be packaged, plus an additional 3 inches.
2. Use scissors to cut the bag material in a straight line.
3. Ensure the bag is cut to the desired length.
4. The bag is now ready for vacuum sealing.

If your Seal-a-Meal FSSMSL0160-033 machine does not progress to stage 3 and does not seal the bag, follow these steps:

1. Ensure proper placement: Make sure the open end of the bag is not in the drip tray but correctly placed on the sealing strip.

2. Close the lid properly: The machine will not start if the lid is not fully closed. Place one hand on each end of the upper lid and press firmly.

3. Check the bag: Ensure the bag is not custom-made with the cut end on the lower gasket or drip tray. It should be on the sealing strip.

4. Avoid overheating: Let the machine cool for 20 seconds between uses. If sealing many bags, wait 25 minutes between sessions.

5. Inspect the bag for leaks or punctures: A small hole or fold can prevent proper sealing. Use a new bag if necessary.

By following these steps, the machine should proceed to sealing.
