Central processing unit The central processing unit is the brain of your PC. It executes all your commands. Main memory Before, for instance, a text can be processed by the central processing unit, it must be loaded into main memory.

Data (e.g. text files and programs) can be stored on a floppy disk. The data (e.g. texts) is stored magnetically on the floppy disk, like music on a tape cassette.

Read the information the vendor supplies with the disk and take note of the rules for handling floppy disks given below.

This prevents data from being inadvertently deleted or overwritten. Floppy disks containing important data should be write-protected.

Never clean the PC's floppy disk drives with cleaning disks. Even just one attempt is forbidden and would destroy the read/write head in the disk drive within 20 seconds.

As a hard disk has considerably more storage capacity than a floppy disk and works faster, you are recommended to copy the operating system and the application programs onto the hard disk.

Most of the keys on the keyboard have an autorepeat function, i.e. the character concerned is repeated as long as the key is held down.

    Keyboard System operation Calculator keypad (numeric keypad) The calculator keypad has two levels, lower-case level and upper-case level. You switch between these using the Num Lock key. The lower-case level is active when the Num Lock lamp is not on. At lower-case level, the keys labelled with two characters output the lower character when they are pressed.

    System operation Data protection Protecting the data with a password You can use a password to prevent unauthorized users from starting the operating system on your PC, looking at your confidential data or accessing and changing your SETUP menu. In your own interest you should be very careful with confidential or important data.

Enter the additional password. Press the Enter key. The PC prompts you to confirm the new password. Enter the additional password again.

    Saving the SETUP menu System operation Saving the SETUP menu The SETUP menu contains entries defining the technical configuration of your PC (e.g. type and number of drives, memory and expansions installed). The SETUP menu is described in the Operating Manual for the processor board. Using the ASETUP program you can copy the SETUP menu of your PC onto a floppy disk (CMOS SETUP boot diskette) and save it in this way.
