    2 Getting Started 2.1 Starting Smart IM Press the (Menu) key to switch to the main applications menu of your device. Navigate through the menu using the joystick until the Smart IM icon is selected, and press the joystick. If the Smart IM icon does not appear in the applications menu, please refer to chapter 6 for installation instructions.

    T I P S Your user name and password will be saved in the relevant fields, saving you the effort of retyping them on your next login. If your device is shared by multiple users, it is recommended to turn Auto Login off, to protect your privacy.

    2.6 Notifications Smart IM generates user notifications to indicate important events, such as new messages arriving (See 4.2.4) or a new contact request (See 3.5.3). Such notifications will be generated even if the application is currently running in the background (See 2.5). Some notifications only involve the sounding of a special tone;...

    3 You and Your Contacts 3.1 About Users and Statuses The Smart community consists of many users like you, from various business groups and companies. Smart IM offers a simple way to stay in instant contact with other community users. At any time, each of the Smart community users has a certain Status.

    All the Online Statuses (statuses other than Offline, Pending and Not In List) are functionally equivalent; messages sent to users in theses statuses will be instantly delivered (See 4.2.2).     When a contact logs into the Smart server, their status changes from Offline to Online, and a notification tone sounds. The notification tone will sound even if the application is currently running in the background (See 2.5). 3.4 Your Status Your status, as presented to other users, is displayed in the titles of all the Main Screen’s tabs, following the tab name.

    3.5 Private Contacts On top of colleagues in your own company or business group (which always appear in your contacts list), other Smart users can be added to your contacts list as Private Contacts. Private contacts are indicated by the icon appearing to their right.

    3.5.2 Removing a Private Contact To remove a private contact from your contacts list, highlight the relevant contact in the Contacts tab, then press the Options key and select Remove. Note that only private contacts may be removed; users of your company or business group are permanent and cannot be removed from your contacts list.

    4 Chatting Smart IM allows you to chat with other Smart users using text messages; if your chat-peer is currently online, messages will be delivered to them instantly. If not, messages to this user will be stored in the Smart server and delivered as soon as their addressee logs in.

    The larger portion of the screen is used as a Messages Area: Here you can view all the previously sent or received messages. Each message is preceded by the name of its sender (either you or your chat-peer). Use the joystick to scroll up and view older messages.

    4.2.3 Receiving Messages When an instant message from another user is received, it will be added to the messages area of the relevant Chat screen. If this is the first message exchanged with this user, a new Chat screen will be created for the new chat session.

    5.2 Main Screen 5.2.1 About This Screen This is the main application screen while logged in. Contains 3 tabs (Contacts, Active Chats and My Status), each dedicated to performing a specific task (see below). Move the joystick left/right to switch between the Main Screen’s tabs. See section 2.3 for further details.

    5.4 Active Chats Tab (Main Screen) 5.4.1 About This Tab Purpose: Displays a list of all current chat-peers (See 4.3). Reachable from other tabs of the Main Screen by moving the joystick to the left/right. 5.4.2 Keys and Menus • Joystick: Equivalent to selecting Chat in the Options menu.

    If the installation file is found on your PC, use the PC suite for Nokia 7610 software to transfer it to the inbox of your mobile device, via Bluetooth, IrDA, serial port or USB connection.
