Reference Guide for the Model RH340 Internet Access ISDN Router

Automatic Configuration of Attached PCs by DHCP

The Model RH340 router can dynamically assign network configuration information, including
IP, gateway, and domain name server (DNS) addresses, to attached PCs on the LAN using the
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This feature greatly simplifies configuration of
LAN-attached PCs.

DNS Proxy

When DHCP is enabled and no DNS addresses are specified, the router provides its own address
as a DNS server to the attached PCs. It then obtains actual DNS addresses from the ISP during
connection setup and forwards DNS requests from the LAN.

Port Forwarding with NAT

Although NAT prevents Internet locations from directly accessing the PCs on your LAN, the
router enables you to specify one PC (for example, a Web server) on your local network to be
accessible to outside users.

Management Support

The router is designed to be installed and operational within minutes after connection to the
network.
If you are a PC user, the FirstGear Configuration Wizard software enables you to easily configure
the unit from the Windows environment. If you are a Macintosh or UNIX user, you should
configure your router using a PC and then connect it to your network.
