Digital thermometer
The digital thermometer measures your child's body
temperature axially (underarm) or rectally (anal) if you want
additional reassurance.
Note: Oral measurements are usually 0.5 to 1°C lower than the
actual body temperature.
Childrens' temperature
The temperature of a child is normally between 36.5 and
37.5°C. Keep in mind that a child's temperature varies
depending on age, activity, time of day, etc. Remember that
some illnesses do not have high temperature as a symptom.
Temperature measurement should not be a substitute
for consulting your physician. When reporting your child's
temperature to a professional, state the measurement method.
Rectal measurement
Do not insert the digital thermometer into the ear or nose.
We advise you to use the digital thermometer rectally
because this is more accurate than oral temperature
measurement. For rectal measurement of a baby's
temperature, proceed as follows:
1
Remove the protection cap from the digital thermometer.
Make sure that the metal probe of the flexible tip is still
firmly attached to the digital thermometer.
2
Lubricate the tip of the digital thermometer with a
water-soluble jelly.
Note: Do not use petroleum jelly (e.g. vaseline).
3
Press I to switch on the digital thermometer.
4
Lie the baby on its stomach or its side.
5
With one hand, separate the baby's buttocks. With
the other hand, gently slide the tip of the digital
thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2 inch) into the
rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
Hold the baby firmly so that it cannot turn while the digital
thermometer is inserted.
Never push the flexible tip too far into the rectum.
6
Keep the digital thermometer in place until it beeps.
See section 'Audible signals' at the end of this chapter for the
meaning of the beeps.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured,
the display shows 'Lo' or 'Hi'. This means that the temperature is
outside the temperature range. Switch off the digital thermometer,
check if it is correctly positioned and switch it on again.
7
Remove the digital thermometer and read the display.
8
Press I to switch off the digital thermometer.
Note: Switch off the digital thermometer after use. The digital
thermometer switches off automatically after 1 min. if the
temperature measured is lower than 32°C, or after 10 min.
if the temperature measured is higher than 32°C.
