Replacing a Cooling Fan in the Upper
Power Supply Bay
Follow these steps to replace a defective cooling fan
installed in the upper power supply bay.
WARNING: Only trained service technicians
should perform this procedure. Do not remove
the left computer cover with the power on
unless you are replacing a cooling fan. (Never
remove the right computer cover with the com-
puter power on. There are high voltages in this
area that can cause bodily harm.)
Do not touch or attempt to service any compo-
nents other than the cooling fan. Other
components could be damaged if you attempt
to service them with the computer power on.
1.
Remove both computer covers.
See "Removing the Computer Covers" found earlier
in this chapter.
CAUTION: See "Protecting Against Electro-
static Discharge" in the safety instructions at
the front of this guide.
2.
Disconnect the cooling fan's power cable from the
FAN5 connector on the system board.
3.
Feed the fan's power cable through the hole in the
top of the power supply bay.
4.
Unscrew the screw on the left side of the chassis
that holds the metal fan carrier.
5.
Using a screwdriver, pry the top of the fan carrier
away from the chassis.
6.
Lift the fan carrier up and away from the chassis.
Make sure the power cable is not caught inside the
chassis.
7.
Remove the fan by removing the two screws in
the top corners of the fan.
8.
Insert the replacement cooling fan into the car-
rier, and replace the two screws in the top corners
of the fan.
9.
Align the tabs on the bottom of the fan carrier
with the notches in the power supply bay opening.
10. Thread the power supply cable through the open-
ing in the top of the power supply bay and
connect it to the FAN5 connector on the system
board.
11. Swing the fan carrier up so that the top is flush
with the chassis.
12. Replace the screw on the left side of the fan
carrier.
13. Replace both computer covers.
T
roubleshooting Expansion
Cards
If an error message indicates an expansion-card problem
or if an expansion card seems to perform incorrectly or
not at all, the problem could be a faulty connection, a
conflict with software or other hardware, or a faulty
expansion card. Follow these steps to troubleshoot
expansion cards:
1.
Start the EISA Configuration Utility, and verify
that all Extended Industry-Standard Architec-
ture (EISA) and Industry-Standard Architecture
(ISA) expansion cards have been configured
correctly. Save the configuration before exiting
the utility.
See Chapter 5, "Using the EISA Configuration Util-
ity," in the User's Guide for instructions.
2.
Turn off the system, including any attached
peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power
cables from their power sources.
3.
Remove the left computer cover.
See "Removing the Computer Covers" found earlier
in this chapter.
CAUTION: See "Protecting Against Electro-
static Discharge" in the safety instructions at
the front of this guide.
