As demand for petroleum products grew in the 1920's, bulk oil distributors became common in large and small cities. Ship-
ments of gasoline, home heating oil, kerosene and diesel fuel were received in tank cars and reloaded into trucks for local
delivery. Smaller quantities of industrial lubricants and grease were shipped in drums and stored in a small warehouse. A
dealer was usually assigned a territory by the oil company (in larger cities, it was not uncommon to find the same company
represented by several dealers) who would serve local customers. In the years before large storage tanks became common,
daily deliveries were made to many customers, especially filling stations.
