US V-Chip Ratings
U.S. PARENTAL RATING SYSTEMS
Programs with the following ratings are appropriate for children.
❒ TV Y is Appropriate for All Children.
P rogram s are created for very young vie we rs a nd should be suita ble for a ll a ge s, including
children ages 2 - 6.
❒ TV Y7 is for Older Children.
M ost parents would find such progra m s suita ble for childre n 7 a nd a bove . T hese program s m a y
contain som e m ild fantasy violence or com e dic violence , which childre n should be a ble to discern
from reality.
Programs with the following ratings are designed for the entire audience.
❒ TV G stands for General Audience.
M ost parents would find these progra m s suita ble for a ll age groups. T he y contain little or no
violence, no strong language, and little or no se xua l dia log or situations.
❒ TV PG Parental Guidance Suggested.
M ay contain som e, but not m uch, strong la ngua ge , lim ite d viole nce , a nd som e sugge stive se xua l
dialog or situations. It is recommended that parents watch these progra m s first, or with the ir
children.
❒ TV 14 Parents Strongly Cautioned.
P rogram s contain som e m aterial tha t m ay be unsuita ble for childre n unde r the a ge of 1 4
including possible intense violence, se xua l situa tions, strong coa rse la ngua ge , or intense ly
suggestive dialog. P arents are cautione d against una tte nde d vie wing by childre n unde r 1 4 .
❒ TV MA Mature Audiences Only.
T hese program s are specifically for adults and m a y be unsuita ble for a nyone under 1 7 ye ars of
age. T V M A program s m ay have e xte nsive V, S , L, or D .
In addition to the ratings categories explained above, information on specific kinds of content are also
supplied with the V-C hip rating. These types of content may also be blocked. The content types are:

• S stands for S E X U AL C O N TE N T
