Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1.
CAUTION:
The heat sink and fan assembly might be very hot. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the
computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.
To replace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following:
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect
all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer.
2. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 111.
3. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the system board.
4. Remove the direct cooling air baffle. See "Removing and reinstalling the direct cooling air baffle" on
page 112.
5. Locate the heat sink and fan assembly. See "Locating parts on the system board" on page 35.
Note: Depending on your computer model, your computer might come with one or two heat sink and
fan assemblies. The illustrations in the following steps might be slightly different from your computer.
6. Disconnect the heat sink and fan assembly cable from the microprocessor fan connector on the system
board.
