A COM port is a connect or t o a com m unicat ions int erface, usually
t he serial port . The port s are num bered by a num ber behind
" COM" . A com m unicat ions int erface is designed t o connect
hardware like a m ouse or a GPS receiver.
GMT ( Greenwich M ean Tim e) is t he m ean solar t im e at t he Royal
Greenwich Observat ory in Greenwich near London, England,
which by convent ion is at 0 degrees geographic longit ude.
Theoret ically, noon Greenwich Mean Tim e is t he m om ent when
t he Sun crosses t he Greenwich m eridian ( and reaches it s highest
point in t he sky in Greenwich) . Up t o 1972, GMT was t he global
t im e st andard. Because of t he Eart h's uneven speed in it s ellipt ic
orbit , GMT has been replaced by UTC ( Universal Tim e
Coordinat ed) which is an ult ra st able t im e st andard based on
at om ic clocks.
The GPS ( Global Posit ioning Syst em ) is based on 24 sat ellit es
t hat are in orbit round t he eart h. They are perm anent ly em it t ing
t he t im e and t heir current posit ion. The GPS receiver receives
t his inform at ion and calculat es t he longit ude and t he lat it ude of
it s own current posit ion.
The signals of at least t hree sat ellit es are needed t o det erm ine
t he longit ude and t he lat it ude. Wit h t he signals of at least four
sat ellit es t he elevat ion m ay be calculat ed, t oo. The det erm inat ion
has an accuracy of about 3 yards.
The H orizont al D ilut ion of Precision ( HDOP) indicat es t he qualit y
of posit ion det erm inat ion. Theoret ically any value from 0 t o 50 is
possible. The sm aller t he value is, t he m ore accurat e is t he
posit ion det erm inat ion ( value 0 = no deviat ion from t he act ual
posit ion) . Values up t o 8 are convenient for st reet navigat ion.
Point of I nt erest ( POI ) . See
Point s of I nt erest , also called POI , are covered by t he m ap and
m ay be displayed on it . Harbors, airport s, rest aurant s, hot els,
pet rol st at ions, public buildings, and ot hers belong t o t he point s
of int erest . You m ay det erm ine point s of int erest as it inerary
point s for navigat ion purposes.
