SCM Service Control Manager. An HP-UX process which manages multiple HP-UX systems.
SEMI Storage element manageability interface, implemented as SNMP mib's.
SMART Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology.
SMS Microsoft Systems Management Server. An application that provides asset, software distribution, software
metering, and troubleshooting tools for PCs and servers using Microsoft Windows. HP Toptools for Microsoft
SMS integrates the management capability of toptools with Microsoft SMS.
SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol. A standard protocol whereby network devices respond with statistics
and other current data when queried.
SP Microsoft Windows Service Pack.
SSL Secure Socket Layer. A technology used to secure transmission between a web browser and web server.
TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Routable Network and Transport layer protocols that have
become the defacto standard for the Internet, and most heterogeneous networks.
TELNET Telnet provides DEC VT100, DEC VT52, or ANSI emulation interface to many hardware devices
such as Network Hubs, Switches, and Routers. The interfaces uses a connection-based service
of TCP and usually connects via port 23.
TFTP Trivial File Transfer Protocol. A simple and unsecured file transfer system. A common use for TFTP is
downloading files to network devices as they boot. In such cases, an administrator typically configures a TFTP
server for read-only access to a single directory.
toptools A collection of software applications and solutions designed to provide HP customers with lower cost of
ownership through extensive management of HP computing products. At the center of this solution is the
toptools server (also referred to as just 'toptools' or the 'Device Manager') that provides a web-based
management console with asset, fault, security, and configuration management services.
URL Uniform Resource Locator. The address typically used by a web browser to a specific resource's location (e.g.
a web site).
USB Universal Serial Bus.
UPS Uninterruptable Power Supply. A power supply that typically uses batteries to continue providing electricity to
a device when primary power has failed (black out). Most UPS products available today also provide power
conditioning to protect against spikes, surges, sags, and brown outs.
VPN Virtual Private Network.
WAN Wide Area Network. A large network, consisting of interconnected smaller networks.
WBEM Web-Based Enterprise Management. A new method of managing devices that uses CIM (Common
Information Model) and is overseen by the DMTF.
Webagent A common term used to describe a web server application that provides device management information to
remote requesting web browsers. Webagents may reside with a device's firmware, or as a program running
within the operating system of a computer.
Windows XP Next generation Windows operating system expected to be released Fall 2001.
WMI Windows Management Interface. The Microsoft Windows implementation of WBEM. WMI support is enabled
within the Windows 2000 operating system.
WWW World Wide Web. An interconnection of servers and applications on the Internet that use HTTP and web
browser applications provide a user-friendly interface to Internet resources and information.
