Definition of Terms

Digital audio output connector (Optical)
The digital audio output connector (optical) converts
electrical signals into optical signals and transfers
them to the amplifier. Consequently, it has a number
of features including its immunity from electrical
interference from external sources and its ability to
prevent the generation of noise and its minimal effect
on the external environment.
Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital is a digital sound compression technique
developed by the Dolby Laboratories Licensing
Corporation. Supporting 5.1-channel surround sound,
as well as stereo (2-channel) sound, this technique
enables a large quantity of sound data to be efficiently
recorded on a disc.

Letterbox Screen
This is one method for displaying wide-screen video
on a normal sized (4:3) TV; in this view, black bands
appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
Linear PCM Audio (LPCM)
This is a signal recording format that is used for
music CDs. Music CDs are recorded at 44.1 kHz/
16 bits, DVD video discs are recorded at
44.1 kHz/16 bits to 96 kHz/24 bits.
MPEG
MPEG is an international standard format for the
compression of motion video as defined by the
Moving Picture Experts Group, a working committee
which functions under the auspices of the
International
Standardization
Organization
and
International Electrotechnical Commission.
On some DVD discs, the digital sound is compressed
using this system before it is recorded.
Pan & Scan Screen
This is one method for displaying wide-screen video
on a normal sized (4:3) TV; in this view, the left and
right edges of the screen are cut off.
Playback Control (Video CD)
When a video CD package is labeled as "supports
playback control", etc., the user can display a menu
screen on the TV and interactively access certain
scenes and information.
Titles and Chapters (DVD Video)
A DVD is divided into several large divisions (titles), and
several smaller divisions (chapters). These divisions are
assigned numbers, allowing the user to easily specify
where he or she wants to start playback.
